MÄVINN: IKEA’s Craftsmanship with Social Collaborations
MÄVINN: A Unique Journey
From its conception to fruition, MÄVINN stands out as a unique journey of collaboration, innovation, and social impact. This collection doesn’t just signify the partnership between IKEA and various social businesses; it represents the coming together of different cultures, techniques, and ideologies to create something exceptional.
The motivation was not only to craft a visually appealing collection but also one that narrated a compelling story. Embodying this spirit, MÄVINN, which translates to “having the wind at your back”, serves as an apt descriptor for the collection. Consequently, each item symbolizes a unique journey, weaving together narratives of skilled craftsmanship, environmental responsibility, and social empowerment.
Each item in the MÄVINN collection is handmade, honouring the skills and creativity of artisans from across Asia. The wide range of products, from baskets, rugs, aprons, bags to cushion covers, have been crafted using traditional artisan techniques. These products, developed using leftover denim, natural fibres, and handwoven textiles, feature intricate embroidery and tactile details, bringing to the fore the beauty of traditional craft.
Material Sourcing and Durability
IKEA handpicked materials for the MÄVINN collection with great care. The selection includes cotton, leftover denim, and natural fibres. These fibres consist of mulberry bark paper, banana fibre, and jute. The materials stand out for their durability and renewability. They also carry potential to create job opportunities. These resources predominantly come from Bangladesh, India, Thailand, and Vietnam. The collection employs a mix of materials and production techniques. This blend showcases the diversity and expertise of IKEA’s partner social businesses. These collaborations have enriched the collection immensely.
Central to the MÄVINN journey is the collaboration with social businesses. This partnership notably aims to generate long-term employment and bolster the livelihoods of people in rural regions and vulnerable communities. In alignment with this initiative, IKEA proudly collaborates with more than 11 social businesses on a global scale. The MÄVINN collection holds a significant position, as it represents IKEA’s second global social entrepreneurship collection and strikingly marks the first that will recur annually under the same name.
Infusing Job Opportunities into Craftsmanship
The collaboration with local artisans has been a joyful and enriching experience for the designers. It’s not just about celebrating traditional craftsmanship, but also about creating meaningful job opportunities for those in need. MÄVINN aims to support artisans and their communities, making handcrafted items accessible to people around the world. MÄVINN is more than just a collection; it’s a manifestation of diverse cultures and a deep love for travel. The designers’ journey through Bangladesh and India served as a source of inspiration, helping them to blend the social impact, warmth, and comfort of natural fibres with the versatility of denim into a cohesive collection. The MÄVINN collection champions traditional craftsmanship, ensuring that each piece is unique and special. It’s like stepping into an old market, where every item has its story to tell. To make each product stand out, decorative elements, testimonials, and other ornaments are incorporated into the designs.
Supporting Local Artisanship
The MÄVINN journey extends beyond the design process and involves finding the right partners to actualize the collection. Each product’s design considers the production site’s location, skills, and job opportunities. As a result, local artisans in India, Bangladesh, Thailand, and Vietnam, areas rich in natural materials and craftsmanship, produced the MÄVINN collection.
Each piece in the MÄVINN collection carries its narrative, revolving around creating more job opportunities for people in rural and marginalized areas across Asia. With MÄVINN, IKEA hopes to create a personal space that reflects not just aesthetics but memories, stories, and experiences.
Starting from June 2023, the MÄVINN collection will be available in IKEA stores, bringing to you a unique blend of craftsmanship, culture, and social impact.
