Liv Damarco: The way of a new face
Can you tell us a little about yourself and how you got started in modeling?
I was discovered when I was just 12 years old in my hometown of Blumenau. At that young age, I knew that I wasn’t quite ready to dive into the industry, so I focused on development. It wasn’t until I was 14 that I made my first trip to São Paulo to visit my agency, but, I was still too young to work. For the next year, I shifted my attention towards my studies and had my sights set on applying for architecture programs at universities.
When I turned 17, my agency contacted me once again and I decided to give modeling another try. This time around, I was determined to take better care of my body and mindset. Not long after, in my senior year of high school, I entered and won the “Supermodel of the World” contest by Ford Models, which gave my career a boost.
After finishing high school, I moved to São Paulo and soon landed my first international contract, spending 6 months between China and Hong Kong. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic forced me to return to Brazil for a while to take care of some necessary matters, including continuing my studies in interior design. However, I signed with a new agent in 2021, which led to exciting work opportunities in London and Paris.
Now, I’m back in Brazil again, taking care of myself and focusing on my postgraduate studies in neuroarchitecture. Soon, I’ll be heading out to travel once more, and I have a strong sense that I’ll be achieving even more success in my career.
What do you think sets you apart from other models in the industry?
My curiosity to understand the field is something that I’m proud of, but also since kid I have a great sense of adapting well to different situations and places, so I deal with whatever appears to me and end up taking a good side of things forward. I seek to understand the modeling industry beyond what happens in front of the cameras and to learn more about the background work. So, I’m really into learning about fashion, photography, production, business, and everything that can add to my work. The more you know, the better you do what you have to.
“I try to have consistency in my workout routines and clean eating, but I always listen to my body.”
How do you define beauty? What does it mean to you personally?
Beauty is a very broad thing for me and it’s hard to put into words. I truly believe that beauty is more than what we can see, even if it sounds cliché. Beauty is what you really are, your values, how you treat people; beauty is what you take from inside yourself and add to each other’s lives.
How do you stay healthy and fit? What’s your beauty routine?
Staying healthy and fit is about balance. I try to have consistency in my workout routines and clean eating, but I always listen to my body. When you know and respect your body – especially your mind – everything works perfectly together. But it’s also important to have help from professionals in the health and medical area.
What do you think are the biggest challenges facing the modeling industry today?
Everything these days seems to be focused on what’s “trending”. Nothing seems to last or endure because there’s always something new that emerges in every moment. I’m not saying that having a lot of options is a bad thing, but I believe that the immediacy and replacement culture that mirrors technology is making everything feel bland. Adding to this feeling of uncertainty is the fact that there’s a lot of competition and physical and emotional demands in the modeling industry.
This can lead to a state of fear, which is why it’s important for models to be emotionally strong. It’s becoming increasingly difficult to be recognised, so it would be nice for models to embody what it truly means to be a model, not just in terms of physical measurements and height, but also in terms of holding strong to our values and making a positive impact on society through our work. This way, brands and clients will see the worth in us as true people, and not just as passing trends.
How do you think they can be addressed?
When it comes to technology, it’s important that we learn how to use it in a responsible and respectful manner. Because it’s not going to disappear overnight. The “trending” of things, leading to changing and evolving will continue. But models can find ways to stand out from this cycle by having self-respect and a strong personality. High competition in the industry will always exist, but it’s important to keep striving for improvement. When it comes to terms of emotional and physical demands, the progress right now may sometimes feel slow, but we can all work together – including with our agencies, agents, bookers, and clients – to create a healthier and more supportive environment in the industry. As the saying goes, “be so good that they can’t ignore you”, and I believe that models can demonstrate the importance and value of our profession through out well-done work.
What has been your favorite modeling experience so far? Why?
My favorite modeling experience was my first job in São Paulo. When my booker gave me the address, I thought it was for a go&see or something similar. However, it turned out to be a fitting job for the 2019 summer campaign of Arezzo. A Job hich featured the one and only: Gisele Bündchen. When the stylist assistant asked me if I knew who I was fitting for, and I said “no,” he laughed cutely, and I instantly understood. Gisele is my ultimate inspiration, and I will never forget that moment. It was incredibly meaningful, and somehow, it showed me what I can achieve in this industry.
Can you share some tips for aspiring models who are just starting out?
It’s crucial to find a reputable model agency or agent who understands the industry well and whom you can trust. However, it’s important to recognize that this process may not be easy. Not be easy as you’ll likely face numerous rejections and may miss your family. But if you believe in your potential and value as a model, anything is achievable. If you’re confident that this career path is right for you. Don’t give up on your dreams, and keep pushing forward to achieve your goals.
