We at Beautymute are a big fan of giving a platform to young talents. Today we introduce you to model Alexia Cheula. The new face, which tells about your path as a curvy model. About her challenges, diversity and her personality.

How did you become involved in the curvy modeling industry? Can you share your journey of embracing and celebrating your curves?

I unexpectedly got involved in the modeling industry and turned into a model overnight. Participating in the curvy modeling sector made me realize that my body was simply normal. A fact I felt should be embraced globally. Curves embody femininity and recognize the uniqueness of a woman’s body. Even before I began, I had a strong sense of confidence in my body. My hope is that every woman, model or not, adopts this mindset.

What changes and progress have you observed in terms of diversity and inclusion in the fashion industry in recent years?

We’re witnessing an evolution: brands striving to meet societal needs, to represent a significant portion of the population. They are aiming to shatter a utopian image that the modeling industry has projected for too long. Seeing this transformation through the work I do brings me joy. Including curves in fashion impacts all sectors: at my gym, the model featured in the advertising campaign is curvy.

What challenges have you faced as a model who doesn’t conform to traditional beauty norms, and how have you overcome them?

As a tall, curvy model, I frequently face difficulties with clothing choices, as industry standards overlook my unique characteristics. It’s often a struggle to find jeans to fit my ample hips and clothes with long enough sleeves. Additionally, a current challenge is understanding the demands of brands for body conformity during fashion shows, with scarce representation of models who resemble me.

How do you maintain a healthy body image and self-confidence in an industry that often promotes unrealistic beauty ideals?

I firmly believe we must persevere, regardless of the cost, and challenge industry norms. We need to demonstrate that society won’t conform and demands deep changes within the industry. This includes instilling confidence in women who don’t fit traditional standards, showing that we won’t submit to harmful ideals, even under pressure. It’s a revolution against an unrealistic utopia.

Can you share any notable experiences or campaigns you’ve been a part of as a model who doesn’t fit the traditional beauty ideal?

I don’t have a negative experience to share, as all brands I’ve worked with aimed to emphasize women’s curves. However, as a curvy model, I don’t work as much as my thinner colleagues. Sometimes, during shoots, I can spend hours without a shot because I lack suitable clothes, highlighting the incomplete integration of curves in fashion: the clothing options for curves are much more limited.

How would you define your personal style as a model who doesn’t conform to traditional norms? Are there any designers or brands you admire for their inclusivity?

“I admire brands like Esther Manas and Jean Paul Gaultier for their true inclusivity. I aim for a versatile style, making do with what fits my body. Beautiful pieces can be found anywhere, it just requires searching.

How do you use your platform as a model who doesn’t conform to traditional beauty standards to inspire and empower others to accept and feel comfortable in their own skin?

“I post and strive to inspire, especially for redheads who, like me in the past, lacked self-confidence due to their hair color and past experiences. I aim to share and pass on my love for my hair color. Naturally, this comes with the acceptance of being very light-skinned and having freckles.

How do you collaborate with other models or influencers who also deviate from traditional beauty norms to promote diversity and body positivity in the industry?

I’d tell aspiring models that anything is possible. But modeling should involve an approach that drives change and includes as many people as possible in fashion. I’d also remind them that the curvy model community is here, supportive, and stands by every new model. Confidence is the secret, and with it, we can surpass the standards society imposes on us.

What advice do you have for aspiring models who don’t fit the traditional beauty ideal and wish to pursue a career in the fashion industry?

My goals are straightforward: to be a well-recognized model and be part of the new generation changing fashion’s future. I aim to represent women who struggle with clothing options and don’t see themselves in fashion shows. My hope is to exemplify a new fashion era, where every size is normal and considered beautiful. I aim to ensure each woman’s beauty is respected, particularly for racialized women.
